Activities festivals and
events
There's always something going on in Looe, whatever the season! Throughout the
year there are numerous events celebrating Looe’s unique historic and cultural
links to the sea.
The Festival by the Sea is a carnival of music and colour every other year with
entertainment, competitions, treasure hunt, dancing, food and drink tastings and
it’s all free! On a warm summer’s evening local choirs, including the Polperro
Fishermen’s Choir, St Piran Singers or The Looe Valley Singers often entertain
with open air concerts in the Rose Garden by the Guildhall and on the seafront.
Looe Carnival at the end of July is a week of fun and activities including the
traditional ‘Furry Dance’, pavement artists, sandcastle modelling, dancing on
the seafront and the Grand Carnival Procession.
Looe is well served with Golf Clubs, and has a sports centre at the Community
School.
The pride of the fishing fleet is at stake at the annual Trawler Race. There are
trophies for the best dressed boat, crew fancy dress and the first boat over the
line. It’s a fantastic sight to see, over 20 trawlers under “full steam”, racing
round Looe Bay, bedecked with flags, bunting and crew in fancy dress.
Looe is illuminated over the festive period and is renowned nationwide for its
Christmas and New Year festivities and is regularly voted one of the top five UK
destinations to see in the New Year. The winding narrow streets throng with
revellers, where fancy dress is obligatory! Close to midnight the crowds make
their way to the seafront or Millpool to welcome in the new year.
