Mining heritage
The prosperity of Looe in the mid 1800’s was inexorably linked to the mining
industry high on the edge of Bodmin Moor at Caradon Hill. The Liskeard - Looe
Union Canal was built to transport coal, copper ore, limestone and granite to,
and from the mines of Caradon. With the opening of the railway in 1860 the canal
became largely redundant. The remnants of some locks can still be seen and there
are plans afoot to restore some features. Cornwall is now been recognised as a
World Heritage Site for our Industrial Mining Heritage.
